Using Water

Earth is packed with natural resources we can't live without, and water is definitely one of the most important. You’ll find it in oceans, seas, rivers, and even underground as groundwater. In fact, water covers about three-quarters of the planet’s surface!

Water has tons of uses and benefits that make it such a blessing every day. Here are some of the ways we use water, plus a few tips on how to save it:

Ways We Use Water

  • Cooking: Water is a key ingredient, especially when making soups and lots of other dishes.
  • Farming: Plants need water to grow — it’s essential for their survival and overall health.
  • Cleaning: From washing floors and cars to cleaning doors and windows, water is a must.
  • Personal care: Water is used for ablution before prayer, bathing to wash off dirt and dead skin, and even to help release negative energy like stress, anger, or sadness. That’s why people who get angry easily are often told to wash their face or perform ablution.
  • Industry: Factories rely on water to cool buildings and machinery. For example, tile and stone factories use water to cool down the heat caused by friction.
  • Generating electricity: Waterfalls and dams turn turbines that produce electricity.
  • Drinking: Without water, no humans, animals, or plants could survive.
  • Manufacturing: Water is used as a raw material in making soft drinks and juices, and it’s also used to wash fruits and veggies before they’re canned or frozen.
  • Firefighting: Water is crucial for putting out fires.
  • Fountains: Beyond looking beautiful, fountains cool and refresh the air around them.
  • Recreation: Water sports and hobbies like swimming, diving, water skiing, and surfing all depend on water.

How to Save Water

There are plenty of simple ways to use water more wisely, like:

  • Using a bucket instead of a hose to wash your car — it saves a ton of water.
  • Watering plants with modern methods like drip irrigation or sprinkler systems to avoid wasting water.
  • Regularly checking your home's faucets and pipes for leaks to prevent unnoticed water loss.
